Tips on Starting Potty Training

Tips on Starting Potty Training

You may have noticed that your child’s bowel movements have become more regular, and you’re changing fewer diapers lately. Or your child starts to show an interest and desire to learn to use the potty. These are some of the signs that your kid is ready to ditch the diapers.

Many children show signs of being ready for potty training between ages 18 and 24 months, and some children may wait until 3 1/2. As a provider of child care in Potomac, Maryland, we advise you to be more patient. Remember that potty training is a process and that all kids are different.

Here are some of the tricks we have curated from experts and parents from our preschool to make potty training easier for you and your child.

  • Get a potty chair your child can practice sitting on.
Place a potty chair in the bathroom or wherever your child is spending most of his or her time. At first, encourage your child to sit on the potty chair in clothes, and when they’re ready, your child can go bare-bottomed.
  • Establish a routine.
Implement a simple schedule. For example, you can encourage going on the potty after naptime, after eating or drinking lots of liquids.
  • Help your child become familiar with detecting his body’s signals.
Watch your child closely, and when you notice some signs that your child might need to use the toilet, such as squirming, squatting, let them head to the toilet.
  • Offer your child small rewards to keep them motivated.
Keep a chart to track successes. Always give your child a high-five or a hug to reinforce that he/she is doing a great job.
