Helping Your Child Transition from Home to School

Helping Your Child Transition from Home to School

Transitioning to a preschool can be challenging for kids, especially since they’re used to just being at home. Coming into a new environment filled with unfamiliar people can cause both anxiety and excitement, and may affect their academic performance, social development, and mental state. As parents, you may be anxious about your child’s first day at school.

We understand your concerns. As a dedicated provider of child care in Potomac, Maryland, we have listed the things you can do before and during your child’s transition to help them feel comfortable and get used to their new environment.

  • Talk about the transition to your child in a positive way.
Share your experience or ask her/his siblings to tell her/him about their experience to encourage them that it’s going to be okay.
  • Practice reading and writing.
Before the school year starts, set a time for reading and writing. This will prepare them to handle school activities and help them feel more confident.
  • Use pretend play.
Roleplay will help your child learn how to accept change and how to begin new roles.
  • Let them join afterschool activities.
Afterschool programs can help your child form new friendships, develop teamwork skills, and improve academic skills.
  • Visit your child’s preschool together.
If you can, tour the school with your child to help them familiarize the new environment and give them comfort and confidence.

If you notice your child’s showing signs of poor transitioning, talk to them about it and meet with their teachers so you can work address your child’s discomfort.
