An Introduction to Developmental Milestones

an-introduction-to-developmental-milestones

Developmental milestones are skills that a child learns to do as they grow. For example, the first time they learn how to wave, crawl, stand, walk, and speak are all developmental milestones. Every child has his/her own pace and learns differently, so it is impossible to know exactly when they will unlock a new milestone. However, there is a normal development age range to give you a general idea of what to expect.

For example, at 1 month old, a child can move their head from left to right and can close their hands tight. At 3 months old, a child can grasp small toys and starts to babble. At 7 months old, a child can sit and support his/her weight on his/her legs. At 1 year old, a child can crawl without assistance and walk while holding on to a support tool.

As parents, developmental milestones will help you know if your child is experiencing a developmental delay which is usually due to ADHD, autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, learning disability, and others. If you think your child has a developmental delay, consult with a doctor immediately. Detecting it early will make a big difference.
